- What is the difference between GST, HST, PST and QST?
- GST is the 5% federal sales tax. Ontario, Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, Newfoundland and Labrador and Prince Edward Island combine it with their own tax into one HST. British Columbia and Saskatchewan charge PST and Manitoba RST on top of GST, and Quebec charges QST. Alberta and the three territories charge GST only.
- How do I take GST/HST out of a total?
- Divide the total by one plus the combined rate: in Ontario, divide by 1.13 to get the price before HST. Choose “including tax” in the calculator and it does this, with each tax line rounded to the cent.
- Is QST charged on top of GST?
- No. Since 2013 the 9.975% QST is calculated on the price before GST, the same base as the 5% GST, so the two add up to 14.975%.
- Where do these rates come from?
- GST and HST rates from the Canada Revenue Agency; PST, RST and QST from British Columbia, Manitoba, Saskatchewan and Revenu Québec. Each province page links its sources, checked 21 October 2026.
